Ah, Singapore; the tiny city-state with enormous appeal. Historically — notwithstanding a brief spell under Japanese occupation, during World War II — it spent 144 years under British rule, while today its narrative is arguably still shaped by a large population of immigrants, often loudly frustrated by its ‘sterile’ nature or shoebox-sized real estate. However, as with most things, there’s context. Yes, it’s policed heavily – chewing gum, vape pens, Airbnb and many over-the-counter meds are all illegal – but it’s also safe; people regularly leave their handbags on the floor of the MTR while travelling, or their wallets to reserve tables while queuing for street food at its legendary hawker centres. And, it’s a place known for extraordinary infrastructure – especially for people who want to rack and stack their income.

Recent blockbusters like Crazy Rich Asians (such is its Sex and the City level of impact, there’s now citywide tours of its filming locations) have only solidified its reputation as a playground for the ultra-wealthy (according to London-based investment research in 2022, Singapore ranked fifth amongst the most prosperous countries in the world). And with a futuristic international airport that’s become a tourist attraction in and of itself, there’s no shortage of things to do in Singapore. Come November, the city comes alive for Formula 1’s first night race – its drivers burning rubber against a backdrop of iconic buildings like the 57-storey Marina Bay Sands – over a weekend of parties, headline concerts and events. There’s no getting around it: even if you’re eating each meal at a hawker market and getting around town solely on the MTR, costs can still rack up quickly while you pay for the privilege. In those times, when it comes to a hotel, you often just want the basics done well. At our age, this means: decent bed and sheets; thoughtful design (anything from the placement of USBs/sockets to an in-room kettle); power-shower; regular housekeeping; a friendly and efficient front desk; and a good location. So, against those criteria, this contemporary spot off Orchard Road knocks it out of the park. There’s no restaurant or bar on-site, but you’re in the middle of town — right by Fort Canning Park and Dhoby Ghaut MTR — and ultimately, it keeps the rate down. Job done.

This historic 137-room property on the border of Tanjong Pagar and Chinatown is, like many enduring divas, no stranger to a resurgence. Originally an administration building belonging to the British during their rule of Singapore, it became part of the Six Senses – until 2020, when the hoteliers handed the keys, along with management of neighbouring Duxton Reserve, to Marriott.
